New Paper Releases

Release of WMM 2025

Geomagnetic Storm Forecast - 6th August 2025

A coronal mass ejection was seen leaving the Sun on 5th August 2025 which may lead to geomangetic storms during 8th-9th August.

More information on the storm.

Two BGS-led Papers Were Published Recently

A new paper published in Front. Astron. Space Sci. explores the geomagnetic and geoelectric response in the UK during the first extreme storm of solar cycle 25. Our other paper published in Geophysical Journal International used geomagnetic observations at the Eskdalemuir BGS observatory to investigate an overlooked local magnetic anomaly.

Release of World Magnetic Model (WMM) 2025

BGS and NOAA-NCEI release new World Magnetic Model - High Resolution for 2025 to 2030.

About BGS Geomagnetism

The Geomagnetism team measures, records, models and interprets variations in the Earth’s natural magnetic fields.

Our data and expertise help to develop scientific understanding of change in the Earth and the environment, from deep within the core out into space.

We also provide geomagnetic products and services to industry and to academic colleagues and we use our knowledge for information and education.
